Pediatric dentistry is an age-related specialty that provides comprehensive oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. Children should establish a dental home with a dentist by age 1.
Services provided include:
- Infant oral health exams and risk assessment for cavities
- Preventive dental care including cleaning, fluoride treatments, sealants, x-rays, proper oral hygiene instructions as well as nutrition and diet recommendations
- Habit counseling – pacifier, thumb sucking and nail biting
- Early assessment and treatment/referral for straightening teeth and correcting an improper bite (orthodontics)
- Repair of tooth cavities or defects
- including evaluation for behavior management techniques such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), minimal sedation, or treatment under general anesthesia
- Care for dental injuries – fractured, displaced or knocked-out teeth
- Treatment at The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD) under general anesthesia
